I didn't know when I wrote it that it would require FOUR MILLION Photoshop layers. The newspaper and Erica's cover were fun to make though.

I rewrote half of it as I went, too. At least I'm pretty happy with it.

My style(s) wander a bit as usual, but I put a lot of effort into getting the emotions right. Normally I'd have done a copy>paste edit with Erica's reaction in panel 4, but I really wanted to ANIMATE this one.


Also: I reviewed the staggeringly wonderful comic Pulse. It's a great comic, READ IT.

I think I finally found one of the things that make your pages seem a tad of a chore to read.
You actually draw too many lines. When dealing in pure black and white you need to work a bit more on your negative space.

All the lines and detail kinda make everything blend. Alternatively it may help to work on your line thickness. Characters should probably have bolder lines. The line thickness for the characters here and the backgrounds are roughly the same.

Even the word balloons have a similar thickness.
Great emotion and imagery as usual! I like the way she just sneaks out while the drama goes down.

Too many lines = yes. I have trouble leaving white space alone sometimes. The obsessive in me says "But we would see MOAR! Hair! Texture! Light grey shadows!"

This page also shows that I've been cheating in places to achieve a 50/50-ish balance between b&w by using black gutters for the night scenes. It's daytime, and this page is BRIGHT.

The good news is I'm basically drawing a coloring book, so eventually this page won't burn retinas.

personally, I don't see anything wrong with your line thickness. for the most part I can easily tell what is going on. to me the problem may be that there is just too much going on. This page could have easily been broken up into two separate pages. Still I can't be too judgmental, because your artwork always looks amazing.

Line thickness = I ink with markers. I try to vary it up, but the faster I push, the more the lines are all the same.

Too much = I'm a big fan of DENSE comics like Fell by Warren Ellis, Watchmen by that guy who wrote Watchmen, and Dark Night Returns by Mank Friller.

I also really like scenes where two things are happening at once.

As far as I am concerned the story density or line thickness are not you weak points. But, your artwork is definitely your strong point. And I am a fan of your art. while stories depend on the readers, which you seem to be focusing on a particular sophisticated audience. your stories are poetic and have meaning which fall short on people like me because after a certain age I stopped finding meaning in stories and have been more focused on the experience. But, still your artwork is fantastic and I marvel at your abilities to do that. but, there are plenty of young people out there that have limited life experiences and would find this story very entertaining. (which is a larger percentage of your audience than people like me.)

I don't know when it happened, but I turned into Alan Moore at some point and felt the need to cram my stories with depth and symbolism and themes and such. Which is fine, but MAN it's a lot of work when, unlike Moore, I'm the one drawing the bloody thing.
