SwordCat Writes | A Digital Letter Column

***UPDATE 07/15: Can't get this done today but it's SO CLOSE. Sunday I spend with my fiancee and I can't make her wait around while I finish inking a comic page. Will finish inking Monday morning; won't post 'til Wed. 'cause lettering takes drawing time I could spend better, well, drawing. Trying for 2-page catch-up update on Wed.***

***Update 07/14: I am inking page 10 at work on downtimes. Going decently fast. I have three hours to work on it tonight, and another 3-5 hours Sunday morning. I can letter it at work early Sunday afternoon - hopefully it will be up no later than 2:30 pm PDT 07/15.***

James is a letch, but he's a decent letch. As much as he wants to just enjoy it, he's very aware of Julia's naivete (sp?). He's world-wise; she's not.

And yeah, that almost sex-scene in issue #1, as dry as I tried to make it visually, is still pretty charged with a sense of MATURE CONTENT. So, this content is not without precedent. And Julia's nudity here isn't cheap fan service or whatever; there's an artistic and story/character based reason for it. Swearsies.

Latest page, almost on time. I was really nervous to ink this one -- there really was no way to know if it was gonna work until it was halfway done. I love how it turned out.

For anyone wondering, the grey tones on Julia in "panel" 4 were done completely in ink with a VERY dry Pentel color brush, but they came out too light. I went back in with the color brush, a regular pencil, and little .3 marker scratchings. Also, I completely fucked up the face shadows and the eyes and had to go back in and stipple with a dry-ish brush of Pro white, which I think turned out STUNNING. A very pure vision of what Julia looks like in my head.

Speaking of Julia, I'm still on the nudity fence. I don't really want a mature readers tag, but maybe I'm there with the violence and swearing anyway. So, poll:

I'm a little prudish sometimes, I think. The only time nudity really annoys me in a story is when there's no point to it, but there's definitely a point to it here.

The nudity seemed less nude in the script stage; you start drawing it and you're like "Wow, she is naked." She's meant to look more body painted/latexed than straight nude.

Another jaw dropping page and borderless again! Everything about this page is awesome, the flow, how you used her wings to frame everything, their expressions, the shading--my God that shading is amazing.

Again, coulda sworn I already replied to this. I have the attention span of a damn gnat...

Thanks again.:) This was a fun page to do. The shading got VERY involved, and is one of the rare uses of graphite in finished EK art (it's over 90% ink thought).

I was afraid James' thought-bubble-pictogram would be too silly, but I couldn't resist.
