SwordCat Writes | A Digital Letter Column

***UPDATE 3: Fuck it - new page is done. Who needs sleep?***

***UPDATE 2: Sorry, Photoshop took longer than I thought. Will letter tomorrow (Thurs.) morning and POST. Immediately begin work on next page after breakfast.***

***UPDATE: New page is being cleaned up white Pro White, almost done. Then it's into Photoshop. Will be lettered later tonight and posted before midnight. Thanks for your patience and continued interest. Unless you got bored and left me forever in which case SCREW YOU, DAD!

...sorry, bit personal...***

Actual nudity, and I'm on the fence. I like it, I think it adds to the scene, with Julia getting close to James, becoming more "human" in anticipation of intimacy... but there are a LOT of prudes in the world. Hmm. May censor for print.

Sorry it's so late in the day East Coasters and everyone else. James' hair took FOREVER. Julia's belly too. But that hair, ARGGHHH. I don't draw upside-down boy hair well. I'm learning.

The idea was for this page to read, visually, like falling in love (all over again, in this case) feels -- which is, for me, a bit topsy-turvy. You can't tell what you should do now, or do next, and it doesn't matter if your feet work: you're at her mercy.

Fun production fact:
If you superimposed my standard 5-tier grid over this, you'd see that it's still composed like all the other pages! Oh yeah! YYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

...I've been mainlining coffee, don't mind me...

Soup Sock,
-Caley

the artwork is amazing, simply amazing. I only wish I could figure out what is going on. It either too deep or I am too stupid.

I'm pretty proud of this page, but I need to edit it so the balloons overlap the art so as to better direct the eye.

Hole-ee. Crap. Man. Holy crap. Borderless storytelling done flawlessly, Eisner would applaud and deservingly so, I mean holy shit. And the shading! Everything has so much depth of field, I really wish I could do that, going to have to try in my sketchbook. See? Now you're teaching me something. Told you were like Todd and Turner.

Thought I replied to this ages ago...

First, thanks!

Second, here's a tip: the original page has (in blue pencil) the standard 5-tier grid every other page of EK has, so it's built around that same structured top-to-bottom flow. I decided most of the way through the pencil stage to not ink the borders, and just overlap the elements.
